Requirements and procedure for Vietnam visa extension

If you are in Vietnam and your visa expiry date is about to come, but you still wish to stay in Vietnam for longer. You, in that case, have two options:

  1. Leave Vietnam and then come back with another visa; OR
  2. Extend your current Vietnam visa.

Anyway, the second option may cost you less. So, what you should do to have your visa extended in Vietnam? Here is some information which may be useful for you in this case.

When to apply for a visa extension service?

Since it takes about 5-7 working days to finish a visa extension from submitting your passport, following the procedures at Vietnam Immigration Department Office and having your visa extended, you’d better extend/renew your visa at least 1 week (for 3 months visa, preferably 2 weeks) before your visa is expired.

Where to apply for visa extension service?

There are two ways for you to handle your visa extension:

  1. Directly contacting the Vietnam Immigration Department.
  2. Contacting a Travel Agency and having them handle it for you.

Requirements for a Vietnam visa extension?

  • Before you apply for visa extension, your passport must have 2 blank pages at maximum.
  • Stay in 1 more month: If your current visa is 1 month single, 1 month multiple, 3 month single or 3 month multiple entry visa, you are allowed apply to extend visa for 1 more month.
  • Stay in 3 more months: If your current visa is 3 month single or 3 month multiple entry visa, you can apply to extend visa for 3 more months.
