Although built in the last century, the ancient houses of Cai Cuong, Binh Thuy or Huynh Thuy Le in Mekong Delta region still retain the old architecture.

1. The ancient house of Cai Cuong (Vinh Long province)

Cai Cuong ancient house was built in 1885, owned by the family of Mr. Pham Van Bon, a local landlord in the past. The house has a width of 15 m with about 6 m high wooden columns for holding up a layer of yin and yang tile roof. The frame is built with two perpendicular folds: the main face in the north facing to Cai Muoi canal and the back face connects to the front house. The facade is a corridor with two sides by the arched staircase. The doors are constructed in semicircular domes to represent the owner as a person with a certain influence in society.

It attracts visitors not only by the external architecture but also by the interior decoration. The whole building is divided into three rooms with garden access in the middle while other items such as desks, chairs, antique cabinets are also made of precious woods and are kept almost intact to this day.

2. The ancient house of Binh Thuy (Can Tho)

Built in 1870, this building consists of five compartments, two roofs, divided into three parts including the front, middle and back parts with the total area is up to 6,000 m2. The whole structure is symmetrical with yin and yang with a shipyard yard, tile roofs in the style of Tam Da, four lights (representing for Dragon, Unicorn, Turtle, and Phoenix) and 6 rows including 24 wooden trusses made of Lim wood.

Binh Thuy ancient house is located at 26/ 1A Bui Huu Nghia, Binh Thuy, Can Tho. This is a unique architecture with the exterior appearance of a European building but inside is the ancient architecture of the Vietnamese which is the scene of many famous films, including the film “Lover” by the French director.

3. The ancient house of Huynh Thuy Le (Dong Thap province)

Built in 1895, with the main material of wood, the structure of this ancient house was originally composed of three compartments and the walls were replaced by French-style mansions till 1917. If you are lucky enough to come here, you will hear about the famous borderless love story between the owner of the house and Ms. Marguerite Duras.

From the outside, the building is quite eye-catching with French architecture with the bas-reliefs, statues for each window with multi-colored glass on the majestic and superficial beauty. However, the interior is featured, soft and flexible in the East style.

4. The hundreds-of-column ancient house of Tran Van Hoa (Long An province)

Located in Cau Ngang hamlet, Long Huu Dong commune, Can Duoc district, Long An province, the ancient house with hundreds of column was built in 1901 is a national historical site ranked in 1997.

The total area of ​​the project is 882 m2 located in the garden area of ​​more than 4,000 m2 with three-compartmented chapel and two roofs in Hue style. The main material is wood with the base of 0.9 m high boulder, paved with the hexagonal tiles.

Although called the hundreds-of-column house, in fact, the house had 120 columns consisting of 68 main columns and 52 auxiliary small columns separated into pairs connected horizontally by the house and fastened with a wooden crossbar.

In terms of decoration, visitors can see the meticulous, skillful as well as the high expertise of the ancient artisans as the whole system of rafts is very elaborately and meticulously carved to express the extravagant and elegant of the house.
